Giloy – History

Widely known as Guduchi, Giloy is known as Amrit (nectar of immortality). In the ancient Indian story of Samudramanthan, it is said that when the Asuras (demons) were running away with the pot of Amrit, few drops fell to earth. From these drops, vines of Giloy started growing. Since then, Giloy has always been known as Amrit – the nectar of youth and immortality. 

Giloy has also been mentioned in the timeless Indian epic Ramayana and features prominently in the Charak Samhita as an important herb for Medhya Rasayana (mental rejuvenation).

Medicinal Properties

Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia) is a tropical climbing herb that grows wildly in India. It is also now found in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. It is creeper vine that does not require much cultivation. It is common to find Giloy growing at home gardens or even covering ledges and walls in India. The Giloy plant is easily identified by its heart-shaped, bright green leaves. 

Research has found that Giloy contains many chemical compound including Alkaloids, Terpenoids, Lignans, Steroids and others. Due to these compounds, Giloy has highly effective antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-diabetic and anti-stress properties. Giloy is also found to have hypolipidaemic effect and helps in hepatic disorder. It also has anti-cancer and anti-HIV potential, as well as anti-osteoporotic and anti-toxic effect. Besides, external usage of Giloy also helps in healing wounds and helps keep the skin sooth and free of acne and pimples.

Giloy has been used as an Ayurvedic medicine to cure a wide range of ailments like jaundice, gout, rheumatism, urinary disorder, skin diseases, diabetes, anemia, inflammation, allergic condition and anti-periodic disorders. It is a known household remedy for chronic fever and relieves burning sensation, increases energy and appetite. Giloy also helps in digestive ailments such as hyperacidity, colitis, worm infestations, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, and vomiting. Giloy is used to treat liver disorders, and is known to be helpful in the treatment of heart diseases, leprosy and rheumatoid arthritis. It helps boost the body’s immune system by increasing the body’s resistance to infections.

Usage 

The mature stem of the Giloy plant is the most potent part of the plant. The stems are dried under shed and then ground into fine powder. These can be mixed with other natural ingredients like turmeric and neem to create a Kadha. The powder can also be made into a paste and mixed with juices or added to food while cooking. 

The fresh stem and leaves can also be made into a juice by grinding these in a mortar and pestle or a home-grinder. These are then strained and the juice can be consumed fresh by adding warm-water and honey. 

A paste made by boiling fresh Giloy leaves can also be applied to wounds. External application of Giloy paste also helps the skin retain a natural glow as well as aid scalp-care.
